Hand Independence

Techniques and exercises to develop hand independence on the Launchpad.

Hand independence is one of the first roadblocks you will encounter when trying to play more complex Launchpad projects. Especially if you don't have a musical background (playing the piano, drums, etc.), coordinating both hands to play different rhythms or patterns can be very challenging.

This section will guide you through understanding and practicing hand independence specifically for Launchpad covers, so you can play your favorite projects.

Overview

Hand independence means each hand maintains its own pattern (rhythm, melody, or texture) without disrupting the other. On the Launchpad this typically looks like:

  • One hand holding a steady beat or chord progression.
  • The other hand playing melodies, fills, or syncopated rhythms. Practicing this skill improves coordination, timing, and musicality.

Learning Hand Independence

Choose a project from the intermediate projects which introduces a simple drum pattern (e.g. State of Mind by Kaskobi). Learn the right-hand part first, then add the left-hand part slowly. First, practice separately and make sure you can play each part cleanly. Then try to slowly combine the two hands together.

Tips

  • Start very slow. Speed will follow accuracy.
  • Keep movements economical—smaller motions reduce timing errors.
  • Count out loud or subdivide beats to internalize rhythm.
  • Isolate trouble spots and loop them.
  • Gradually add complexity (more notes, syncopation, fills).
